The Literacy Center:
• Trains volunteers to be adult tutors
• Evaluates adult students that need reading help
• Matches students with volunteer tutors
• Provides tutoring materials and support to its tutors
• Provides books for adult learners to check out
• Dedicated to helping improve the lives of many adults in Gadsden County.
New tutors are currently preparing a Reading Class Using the Bible for adults interested in improving their reading skills. Lessons will focus on reading and writing using the Bible as study material.
All tutoring sessions are free and confidential and are scheduled at a time and place convenient to both the tutor and the student.

Literacy Levels
Below Basic Literacy indicates no more than the most simple literacy skills like signing a form or searching a short simple text to find what a person is allowed to drink before a medical test. This is generally referred to as reading at a 5th grade level or below.
Estimates are: Gadsden County 25% State of Florida 20%
Basic Literacy indicates the skills necessary to perform everyday literacy activities like using a television guide to determine what time a specific program comes on or comparing the ticket prices of two events. This level is usually referred to as reading at an 8th grade level or below.
Estimates are:Gadsden County 40.9% State of Florida 22.9%

Based on Gadsden County’s adult population, this means that 14,610 adults cannot use a bus schedule to find out when a bus arrives or read and understand prescription and medical instructions.
