Brooklyn Locke, a successful photographer, is about to get on a plane for a vacation with her husband, Trey, and their two children when Trey vanishes. In a stunning twist, a mystery woman on the same flight offers comfort to the abandoned family, only to reveal that her sister was Trey’s first wife and that he was the prime suspect in her murder. Best-selling Ellison mixes violence—shooting, stabbing, garroting, and an attempt at vehicular homicide—with Brooklyn’s relationships with friends, relatives, and her husband. Ellison switches between the two with ease, so if it’s too tame or too bloody for the reader’s taste, they can just keep reading to get back to their preference. It’s all told in fast-moving prose with an enticing silky presence; readers will swear they can hear the pages humming. Revelations pour out as the tension builds, and readers may find that too much suspension of disbelief is called for. But maybe they’ll take some implicit advice: don’t underestimate a ticked-off lover, especially if she’s holding a loaded revolver.
