Gr. 1. This Early I Can Read series title is a bit reminiscent of Bemelmans' Madeline except that Mrs. Brice has 25 mice, 24 of whom do things in nice straight lines, and one individualist, recalcitrant and creative by turn. Children can't help but root for this small mouse who sleeps on top of the clock in case he wants to know what time it is and cleverly outwits a ferocious cat. Simple vocabulary carries forward a straightforward plot with lots of action. Couple these qualities with Hof's warmly familiar illustrations, and what results is a story that allows beginning readers to sail easily through the book. PW.

K-Gr 2-- This is the usual Syd Hoff silliness that beginning readers love. Mrs. Brice cares for 25 mice. Twenty-four do all the same things, but the 25th one always does something different. If all are exercising, this little mouse sleeps. When they go for a walk, the others march in line, but he rides on Mrs. Brice's hat. When a cat interrupts the walk, it is this independent mouse who saves the day. Hoff's colorful illustrations enhance the story's humor. If Syd Hoff is popular with your patrons, add this one to your collection. --Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, Oreg. (c) Copyright 2010.
