Fiction: Y Though old-fashioned, the story of a small girl's yearning to keep both a mother cat and one of her kittens still speaks to pet owners young and old. Newberry's simple, charcoal drawings of the felines are as elegant and endearing as ever in this Caldecott Honor book. Horn Rating: Superior, well above average. Reviewed by: jmb (c) Copyright 2010. K-Gr 3?This Caldecott Honor Book by Clare Turlay Newberry (McIntosh & Otis, 1940) is the sweet, touching story of six-year-old April whose cat Sheba has three kittens. Though her father insists from the beginning that they live in a one-cat apartment, April becomes very attached to the kittens and believes that she will keep all three, as well as the mother cat. As the kittens grow older her parents arrange to find homes for them. April is torn between giving up the mother or her favorite kitten, Brenda. Her parents finally realize that their apartment is too small, and April suggests they get a two-cat apartment. Barbara Caruso reads the complete text of this classic that will appeal to primary students for its simplicity. It also reinforces the theme of responsible pet ownership. Parents and teachers will find this audio version useful for individual listening, especially with the book to accompany it, for those students who can handle a longer picture book.?Ann Elders, Mark Twain Elementary School, Federal Way, WA (c) Copyright 2010.
