This year, the Friends of the Greenwood County Library is seeking sponsorships from corporations and small businesses as well as donations from individuals to bring the best Summer Reading Program to our children, teens, and adults.

The Summer Reading Program has been a decades-long tradition acrross the county. Here in Greenwood, we seek to use this program to encourage early literacy and nurture the love of reading in our elementary, middle, and high school readers over the summer. Reading during the summer keeps a child's mind active, encourages an activity that can be done anywhere, and boosts children's literacy, empathy, comprehension, and more. Adults who participate in this program not only keep these skills active in themselves, but also model life-long reading and learning for the younger generation.

Unfortunately, the pandemic caused a drop in Summer Reading particpation. In order to encourge readers and nonreaders to begin particpating again, last year we offered new, exciting prizes, including toys, gift cards, electronics, and more. These incentives nearly doubled our completion rate. This year, we know we can do more with the help of our community by offering even more prizes and in-person programs to promote greater participation in Greenwood County.
