Anyone who has listened to an audiobook gets the same chill down their spine when they see the phrase "read by the author." However, in this case, the listener will be delighted by Collins's presentation, as he reads his memoir with skill, humor, and real emotion. The narration is performed with the dexterity of a seasoned actor. Telling his life story from his beginnings as a natural drummer to early run-ins with major musical influences, Collins delivers personal stories about being an absentee father and a less-than-perfect husband and also talks about his music. Some listeners might be put off by his "name dropping" of celebrities and musicians, but the reality is that Collins was a major musician who influenced plenty of singers, songwriters, and drummers. Avid music fans will appreciate the detailed discussions of certain recordings and who played what on which song. Moreover, Collins's openness about his depression after his retirement in 2007 will make fans root for his comeback tour in 2017. Anyone who can sing along to his songs should listen to this audiobook. -VERDICT Fans of Collins's music, whether from his solo work or with Genesis, will truly enjoy this wonderful story.-Jason L. Fans of pop star Collins will relish the friendly sound of his voice as he revisits his childhood and his early career as a child actor, his eventual ascent into music fame, and his most recent return from retirement. He opens up about his personal problems, including alcohol and drug abuse and failed marriages, providing context but not necessarily excusing his actions or shortcomings. He is the ideal narrator for his tale and keeps the flow of the narration highly conversational and intimate, so that listeners feel as if he is right there with him. His emotional projection perfectly aligns with the narrative as he recounts the highs and lows of his life: listeners can feel the happiness, sorrow, and anxiety in his tone and energy as he moves through his life story.
