Gabaldon continues the epic story of Jamie and Claire in this next installment of the multivolume "Outlander" saga, following 2014's Written in My Own Heart's Blood. Narrator Davina Porter brings a delightful versatility to the novel, and her warm—even wry—tones and multiple accents can be amusing. This audiobook is cautiously suggested for fans of time-travel fiction, and enthusiastically suggested for those already loyally committed to this series, but it is not a good entry point for newcomers to Gabaldon's complicated fiction, as there are too many major and minor characters and too many plot situations with insufficient backstory to help listeners figure things out. VERDICT For listeners wishing to boldly journey across a temporal landscape, consulting the several volumes of Gabaldon's series would enhance one's itinerary.—David Faucheux
