When three mysterious sisters move into the neighborhood, unpleasant dog detective Sam and her owner Jennie (with whom Sam can communicate telepathically) decide to investigate. Turns out Sam's instincts are wrong: the sisters aren't witches after all (big surprise). As usual with this series, the mystery is dull, the dialogue forced, and the black-and-white cartoon-panel illustrations, while easy to follow, lack subtlety. (c) Copyright 2011. In this fourth Sam & Friends mystery, Sam the sheepdog and her human friends Jennie and Beth suspect that their new neighbors are witches. How else to explain the three strange sisters who have so many odd pets (including toads, puppies, and a nasty black cat); who cook strange concoctions; and who have a frequent, mysterious visitor who brings and takes away covered cages? This graphic novel adapts Labatt's novel Strange Neighbors (2000) and provides just enough spookiness and mystery for readers venturing into chapter books.--Kan, Ka. Copyright 2010 Booklist
