September 29, 2016

Volpe Conference Room




Call to Order:  Laconia Public Library Board of Trustees held their regular monthly meeting in Volpe Conference Room. Chairman John Moriarty called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.


Present: James Anderson, Kimberly Danosi, John Perley, Liz Rosenfeld, Bob Selig, Glen Smith, and Director Randy Brough.  Alternate present but not seated was Nadine Jordan.  Not Present: City Council Liaison Brenda Baer




Secretary’s Report: 

Minutes of June 23, 2016 approved. Motion: Anderson; Second: Danosi



Minutes of August 25 as a quorum was not present at the August meeting, the Board by consensus accepted the minutes as part of the official record.


Treasurer’s Report: Financial reports for June, July and August were discussed and accepted as presented.


Technology / STEM:   

Liz has volunteered to teach a monthly coding class for grade schoolers in the library.  Randy will work with Liz to develop coding program for elementary age children and explore presenting a Coding for Parents session to provide background for parents to help them encourage their children to participate.  Sessions will be held monthly and will begin in January.  Expected session size is 8 participants working in two-person teams, using the four workstations in the Reference Room.


Olie will reach out to an acquaintance about offering coding instruction for high school students.


Randy will approach Holy Trinity about their ideas for teaching STEM.


Randy and staff will develop science program schedules going out 6-8 months and present said plan at the October Board meeting. 


Building:  Randy will contact BPS to apply temporary repairs to the broken tread plates on the main (Church Street) entrance to get through the winter.  Randy will also seek from BPS a cost estimate for a more permanent plan with construction to begin in the spring with a target completion date well before the end of f/y 2016-17.



Randy will add headers to current job descriptions and email to Board members.


Loraine Murray has been promoted from Library Assistant to the position of Teen Librarian.


Randy, Dot and Deann form a search committee that is interviewing applicants for the library assistant position vacated by Loraine’s promotion.  They are interviewing ten of the thirty applicants.


Director’s Report:  Preparations have been completed for library participation at Pumpkin Fest.


Old Business


Colonial Theater:  The Memorandum of Understanding has been executed by the wholly owned subsidiary of Belknap EDC, by the City of Laconia, and by the library.  The chairman will distribute signed copies of the document to the library Board. 


Filling open Staff positions: Ms. Loraine Murray appeared before the Board, and spoke enthusiastically about her goals and aspirations with regards to improving teen services, programming and attendance. She cogently fielded a number of questions from Board members. 


Randy will work with Lorraine to explore both, developing a library YouTube channel, and offering a YouTube video creation workshop.  Randy will update the Board with a proposal at the October meeting.




Upcoming meetings: RESCHEDULED November 3 at 5:00pm in Volpe Room.
