LACONIA PUBLIC LIBRARY INTERLIBRARY LOAN POLICY

BORROWING MATERIALS FOR OUR PATRONS

Interlibrary loan is offered to all Laconia Public Library card holders in good standing with a proven circulation record. Requests can be made here at the library, by phone or online at the email address above.

Patrons are limited to four interlibrary loan requests/loans in process at any given time Materials not available through interlibrary loan are books owned by the Laconia Public Library, VHS, DVD, reference books, rare books, textbooks, games and software.

There is no fee for in state loans. However out of state libraries often charge a fee. If there is a fee for an item no request will be made unless the patron agrees to pay the fee. Once the item is shipped by the loaning library the patron will responsible for all charges even if the material is not picked up.

Availability of materials is determined by the loaning library. The time varies depending on the item requested and how many libraries own it. Two weeks is an average for materials to arrive but it could be longer. There are no rush requests. If a request is no longer needed, patrons should notify the library so the request can be canceled or the material sent back.

Once a material arrives the patron will be notified by phone or email that the material is available for them. Materials will be held for one week and if not picked up will be sent back to the loaning library.

The loan period is determined by the loaning library. The loaning library may impose restrictions, such as” in-library-use only” or “no renewals” and must be adhered to by the patron. Patrons must request renewals at least three days prior to the due date. Renewals are provided at the owning library’s discretion and can not be guaranteed. We cannot request renewals for items that are already overdue.

Please make every effort to return items by the specified due date. Interlibrary loan service may be limited or suspended for those who abuse the privilege, including those who repeatedly fail to pick up requested material or fail to return materials in a timely manner.

Payment must be made for materials that are lost, damaged or have accrued fines from the loaning library. No refunds will be made for lost and paid interlibrary loan materials that are subsequently found.

LOANS TO OTHER LIBRARIES

The Laconia Public Library will loan all circulating materials with the exception of  games and DVDs to any requesting library. Reference materials may be loaned on an individual basis for a shorter loan period and for in-house-use only. A phone call is best regarding specifics on reference materials.

Electronic requests are the preferred method of request but all forms of request will be accepted. Materials currently checked out will not automatically be put on reserve. It is up to the requesting library to contact our library to reserve materials.

Books from the circulating collection will be loaned for a 6 week period. Audio materials will be loaned for a 6 week period. Books will be renewed on an individual basis. Please call the ILL (Interlibrary Loan) librarian to request a renewal.

The Laconia Public Library will make photocopies in compliance with copyright law. Reciprocal libraries may request photocopies free of charge. Additional copies will be made at a fee of 10 cents per page.

Under normal circumstances ILL requests will be filled if available within two business days. Van delivery is Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If for any reason materials need to be sent via US Postal Service the Laconia Public Library will assume the cost of sending to the borrowing library. Return postage shall be the responsibility of the borrowing library. Photocopies may be faxed when legally acceptable or sent by van or mail.

The borrowing and loaning of ILL materials is to be done between the requesting and loaning libraries. Cardholders may pick up and return their loans at the library at which they are a cardholder. We will not allow our patrons to pick up materials at other libraries nor will we allow cardholders from other libraries to pick up materials belonging to the Laconia Public Library here, they will be shipped on the van to the cardholder’s library thus assuring the transaction will be completely handled by the libraries involved.
