Woods' latest Stone Barrington adventure picks up where Paris Match (2014) left off, with Stone awaiting the results of the presidential election with candidate Kate Rule Lee and her husband, the sitting commander-in-chief, Will Lee. But soon after the winner of the election is announced, Stone finds himself grappling with a more personal problem: his ex-father-in-law has passed away, resulting in the release of his insane ex-wife, Dolce, from the Italian convent she was consigned to after her last breakdown. When Dolce returns to New York for her father's funeral, Stone fears for his life. He is distracted from his troubles by the suspicious death of a congressman who, just before being killed in a hit-and-run, had brought Stone evidence of a damning political conspiracy. Stone works closely with an attractive reporter to expose the conspirators and, unsurprisingly, engages in a romantic dalliance with her. Woods tackles these multiple exciting story lines with aplomb, and longtime readers of the series will enjoy the return of the dangerous Dolce.--Huntley, Kristine Copyright 2014 Booklist

Stone Barrington faces unusual problems in bestseller Woods's rousing 32nd novel featuring the high-powered New York City attorney (after 2014's Paris Match). After celebrating the election of his friend Kate Lee to the U.S. presidency, Stone is saddened by the death of his elderly mentor, Eduardo Bianchi. Because of Eduardo's rumored past mob connections, settling the estate is not simple-and brings Dolce, Bianchi's crazy daughter, back from the convent in Italy where she has been confined. Meanwhile, Evan Hills, a "first-term Republican congressman from Pennsylvania," goes public with a story that will taint his party-and even Stone can't save him from paying a high price for doing so. Stone discovers that a lot of money is floating around, and plenty of people are used to getting their own way. With such a long-running series, the huge backstory could be overwhelming, but Woods insures that new readers won't get lost. Agent: Anne Sibbald, Janklow & Nesbit. (Jan.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
