Spring is almost here! We’re ready to turn the page on gloomy old winter and welcome back the colors, sounds and new growth of spring. It’s not too early to start planning your yard and garden with seeds from our Harwinton Grows Seed Library. Stop in to browse our selection of seeds for veggies, herbs, fruit and flowers. Not sure how to start plants from seed? Learn how at our Seed Starting Workshop on March 15.
The birds are returning. Do you know why birds migrate? Can you identify the birds you see and hear in your yard and neighborhood? Do you know the Library has a Birding Backpack you can check out for a day of outdoor family fun? Join the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society on April 12 for Birds on the Move! to learn all about birds and birding. In celebration of Youth Art Month in March we are featuring artist Benjamin Fitzgerald in our main library. Ben is on the Autism Spectrum, and uses art as a means of self-expression. Meet Ben and learn more about how art helps him communicate at his Artist’s Reception on March 3. On display in our Activity Room in March and April is an Artist’s Invitational Spring Showcase featuring work from local area artists. View the show and meet the artists at their Artists’ Reception on March 21. All are welcome.

In 1850 Fredericka Mandelbaum came to New York and worked as a peddler on the streets of Lower Manhattan. By the 1870s she was a fixture of high society and an admired philanthropist. How was she able to ascend from tenement poverty to vast wealth? She was a business visionary–one of the first entrepreneurs in America.
