Biographical/Historical: This church, first called the Methodist Church, started in Middletown, VA in 1816. The original church was a log structure. In 1853, the log church was replaced by a brick church, which was used as a hospital and stable by federal troops during the Civil War. The current church was built in 1898 and still has one of the last hand-played carillons in the Shenandoah Valley. After the Civil War, the church became part of the “Methodist Episcopal Church, South”; in 1939, it became part of the “Methodist Church”; in 1968, it became “United Methodist Church.”
