SCOPE AND CONTENT:  This collection contains drawings created by cartoonist Leslie Neill Woods for the Winchester Evening Star during the 1930s. Before Woods moved to Winchester, VA in 1911, he drew for the Baltimore World.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Leslie Neill Woods, born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1882, was also related to the prominent Woods family of Winchester. He studied at the Art Student League of NYC. After working at the Baltimore World, he moved to Winchester and was the artistic creator of “Ma Winchester” and “Pa Frederick.” These cartoons were a feature of the Winchester Star. The cartoons were both entertaining and also, according to an article in the Winchester Star”(Winchester Evening Star, Tuesday July 13, 1937) used to call attention the problems of the area which demanded official attention. NOTE:  His name is sometimes spelled with one “l” and sometimes as full name Leslie Neil(l) Woods.
