SCOPE AND CONTENT: The collection contains the account book of Tilman Shumate, a dispenser of general merchandise in Frederick County, VA.  Also included is the settlement of his estate in June 1847.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL:  Tilman (also spelled Tilghman) Shumate is thought to have been born circa 1815 in Fauquier County, VA.  He married Eliza Brown in Frederick County, VA in 1836.  Eliza Brown Shumate, died 1877, is buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, VA.  His burial site is unknown.
