Clarke County Virginia Collection, 1539 THL

SCOPE AND CONTENT: The collection consists of three reports commissioned by the County of Clarke in Virginia. "Historical Character of the Lower Shenandoah Valley: Clarke County Archaeological Assessment" was published May 1994. "A Historical-Archaeological Survey of Mill Sites in Clarke County, Virginia" was published June 1997 and "Final Report African-American Historic Context Clarke County VA" was published in September 2002. All three reports contain illustrations. The collection also includes personal property tax records from 1836 to 1862.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Clarke County was established in 1836 out of a portion of Frederick County and was named for General George Rogers Clarke, the American Revolutionary War hero of the campaign for the Northwest Territory. The town of Berryville is the county seat of Clarke County.
