Biographical/Historical: Belle Grove in Middletown, VA was built from 1794 to 1797 for Major and Mrs. Isaac Hite. Hite received the land from his father in 1783. That same year, Isaac Hite married Nelly Conway Madison, sister to James Madison. The property remained in the Hite family until 1860 when it was sold to John and Benjamin Cooley. During the Civil War, the house was in the midst of the Battle of Cedar Creek. The property has had multiple owners until 1929, when it was purchased by Francis Welles Hunnewell, who had the house restored. In 1964, Hunnewell bequeathed the property to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which is now managed by a separate, nonprofit organization, Belle Grove, Inc.
