SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection contains account books of Henry Baetjer & Co. of Winchester, Virginia, which include references to Miller Plantation Company, Baetjer’s Insurance, and other assets and investments.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Born in Germany in 1841, Baetjer immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland in 1859. Shortly after the Civil War ended, Beatjer moved to Winchester, and opened a dry good business on the southeast corner of Boscawen and Loudoun Street. Over the next 41 years, Baetjer’s dry goods business grew to one of the largest and most successful businesses in Winchester. During this period he was described as a man with simple tastes, devoted to his family, and faithful to his friends. His son, Dr. Frederick Henry Baetjer, became one of the leading pioneers in X-Ray research Baetjer died on May 11, 1912, and is buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, VA.
