Readers have probably seen Sundance (101 Dog Tricks) on TV, as she demonstrates tricks that her beautiful dogs perform flawlessly. They look so fun and easy, and can be, if done correctly. This excellent book begins with the basics of preparing the home for a new dog's arrival, and continues with steps for the animal's smooth transition to family life, including adjustment to wearing a leash; potty training; socialization; and safety. The meat of the text covers useful tasks and tricks that will make your little Fido the best dog in the neighborhood. Each task or trick has clear, well-photographed, step-by-step illustrations. Complementary sections list helpful equipment or additional information, "troubleshooting" problems, and a "tip!" with practice help. Sundance also addresses common issues and ways to reduce or eliminate unwanted behaviors using gentle correction and positive reinforcement. The last section details safety information with lists of poisonous substances and other dangers, and also includes weird things that dogs often do that are actually normal (reverse sneezing, chattering teeth, sucking on toys). VERDICT New and experienced dog owners will find terrific tools to ensure success in behavior and training. Perfect for new dog "parents."-Susan Riley, Mamaroneck P. L., NY © Copyright 2017.
