Cannabis has been a source of food, medicine, fiber, and recreational intoxication since ancient times. Although there is still a great deal of research to be done about its safety and efficacy, cannabis is second only to alcohol as a preferred recreational substance. It is also increasingly legal: cannabis is now at least partially legal for medical use in several states, and eleven states and Canada have legalized recreational use as well. This dictionary, by a journalist who has covered cannabis legalization for more than five years, offers readers some insight into the drug, its history, and its uses. The alphabetical entries range in length from a few sentences to one page, covering a wide range of topics from legal issues (decriminalization), to medical use (microdose), to history (Bible). Commercial and agricultural topics include Big Weed, Emerald Triangle, and Grey Market. Slang terms (stoned/stoner) and people associated with cannabis (Bob Marley, Snoop Dogg) appear as well. Color illustrations enliven the text, which provides a brief overview of the topic and is fun to read. Public and consumer health libraries will want to consider it.
