Last time we saw Chicago cop Boone Drake, he was beginning to recover from the tragic events that claimed the lives of his wife and child; he'd turned a personal and spiritual corner and was willing to risk his professional reputation to prove someone close to him wasn't involved in an attempt on a key witness' life. Now he's married to the woman he risked his career to protect, father to her young son, and he's head of the Chicago PD's Major Case Squad. But out of the shadows comes a new threat, one that could rip apart his new family. As with the previous Drake novels (The Brotherhood and The Betrayal, both 2011), this third and final installment of the trilogy nicely balances down-and-dirty crime motifs and Christian themes. Boone's increasingly desperate hunt for human traffickers is well portrayed, as is his complex relationship with God (which, though central to the book, is not hammered home in such a way as to turn off readers who are just looking for a good crime novel). A satisfying conclusion to a very interesting trio of novels.--Pitt, David Copyright 2010 Booklist
