Ages 2-5. Vibrant full-color illustrations, whose every component--hair, faces, sweaters, leaves, tree trunks, etc.--is outlined in white, distinguish this simple picture book about a thunderstorm. The artwork is both bold and flat, and perfectly suited to the upbeat, nonthreatening tone of the text. Black clouds gather, the wind howls, lightning flashes, and thunder booms--all signaling an approaching storm. Raindrops, and sometimes hailstones, fall from the sky. Some animals seek shelter, while others enjoy the rain, and children don yellow raincoats and red boots to splash in the puddles. Following the storm, a rainbow appears. This stylized presentation, appropriate for even a toddler story hour, contrasts nicely with other storm picture books (Turner's Rainflower , for example) that convey other moods. Fiction: PB This book about a rainy day describes the coming of a rainstorm. There is some confusion about the season of the year: in one illustration, people are dressed in overcoats and fur hats; in another, the children wear no coats. However, the illustrative style is attractive, with an interesting use of space. Horn Rating: Recommended, with minor flaws. Reviewed by: ai (c) Copyright 2010.
