Cassandra Campbell's narration is drenched in melancholy as she portrays a police widow searching for answers after her husband's suicide; listeners not put off by the story's inconsistencies may enjoy her reading. The plot is illogical, the characters flat, and almost no incident is mentioned without serving as a clue. Red shoelaces? A mysterious mark on a prescription label? The only details that don't add something to the improbable puzzle are the sandwiches and cups of tea consumed by Nora at regular intervals. There is also an autistic auto mechanic who speaks only in rhyme yet manages to capture an audio or video recording of every act of police misconduct for several decades, which he hands over to Nora whenever she reaches a dead end. VERDICT Although well reviewed elsewhere, this program is recommended only where uncritical fans of suspense abound. ["Milchman's debut is a chillingly good mystery thriller that quickly picks up momentum and spirals into a whirling avalanche of secrets, danger, and suspense," read the decidedly more enthusiastic review of the Ballantine hc, LJ 12/12.-Ed.]-V-ictoria Caplinger, NoveList/-EBSCO, Durham, NC (c) Copyright 2013.
