Isaacs, author of Just a Note to Say . . . (1995) and Toxic Friends/True Friends (1999), among other works, offers a set of guidelines and practical advice that smacks of authentic dialogue to use in any situation. Even more appealing is her confession that, yes, she was shy and not confident, learning the how-to's of saying the right things at the right time by herself. But no secrets are revealed here; the author outlines 10 rules, from Find out what you have in common to Know how to exit, then immediately gives tangible examples of each from her own experiences. All types of event-talk opportunities are scrutinized, whether potentially toxic family gatherings to critical job interviews; certainly, her conversational tips are straightforward, pragmatic, and easy to learn and apply. This is advice that is timeless and spans all ages.--Jacobs, Barbara Copyright 2009 Booklist
