PreS-More an abstract ode for parents than a book for baby, this title's appeal is limited. The blurry watercolor illustrations and symbolic comparisons such as "like a fish/swimming through a sky" are too intangible for the developmental abilities of the intend audience. Similarly the free-verse poetry, while beautiful, lacks the rhythm and rhyme that appeal to very young listeners. Mem Fox's Time for Bed (Harcourt, 1993) or Maryann K. Cusimano's You Are My I Love You (Philomel, 2011) have a more successful pairing of painterly illustrations and sentimental verses.-Jenna Boles, Washington-Centerville Public Library, OH (c) Copyright 2012. Adapted from Jam's 1999 picture book, this board book incorporates new artwork from first-timer Johnson. "This new baby/ lies in my arms/ like summer dark/ sleeping on new grass," writes Jam, while Johnson's wispy watercolors depict a caring family member holding the child in his lap. Both the art and verse tend toward the abstract, and starry-eyed new parents, more than children, are likely to value the delicate illustrations and ephemeral imagery. Up to age 3. (Sept.)
