About the Library
The Mt. Vernon Branch Library (Walter C. McCanse Memorial Library) was the first to join with the Barry County Library in 1954 in a cooperative system.

Mt. Vernon is named after George Washington's home and serves as the county seat for Lawrence County.

The Mt. Vernon Branch is located at 206 W. Water Street, just off of the northwest side of the court house square.  The library serves Mt. Vernon and a large rural area as well as the Missouri Rehabilitation Center, Missouri Veteran's Home, Missouri Baptist Children's home & Family Ministries, and Missouri Division of Youth Services Treatment center.

A meeting room is available free of charge for non-profit groups and for a small fee to all others.  Rules and restrictions will apply.  For more information and to schedule use please contact the library staff. Click here for the Meeting Use Policy.

Schedule of Events

Pre School Story Time
Wednesdays 10:30 AM

Story time will introduce your preschooler to books and the public library. We read stories, sing songs, do finger plays, simple crafts and have lots of fun.  This first group experience helps children develop language and listening skills.

Story time is for preschoolers 3 to 5 years old.

Story time sessions are approximately 30 minutes in length. We encourage parents and caregivers to remain in the library during story time.  Parents may be asked to assist with special holiday celebrations by bringing prepackaged cookies or treats.

Registration is required. We encourage the children to attend the session in which they are registered. Story time is limited to 20 children.

Story time for three to five year olds is held September through mid-December with a break over the Christmas holidays. Story time then resumes January to mid-May.

Toddler Time
Wednesdays 10:00 AM

Toddler Time is for 6 months to 2 years old and is held September through mid-December with a break over the Christmas holidays, resuming in January to mid-May. Toddler Time has story reading with singing or puppets and lasts approximately 15-20 minutes.

Home School Program
Wednesdays 1:30 PM

This program is designed as a supplement for the enrichment of school age children who are being home schooled. We read stories and use the resources of the library to introduce a variety of subjects and explore specific topics. Children are encouraged to offer their own ideas for future discussions.

This program is for children 6 years to 12th grade. Children 3 to 5 are encouraged to participate in the preschool story time session.

The sessions will start on time and be approximately 45 minutes in length. Parents may be asked to assist on special occasions.

Home school is scheduled September to mid-December, and following a break, January to mid-May
