Interlibrary Loan Policy

Bladen County Public Library will supplement its collection to registered patrons through interlibrary loan (ILL). Interlibrary loan will be initiated when materials requested are not owned by Bladen County Library. ILL requests have no guarantee that the materials, if found in another library, will be loaned.

The charges for ILL service are postage for shipping the materials. This charge will vary with the size and weight of the material requested. Most libraries do not charge a fee to loan materials. In the event there is a charge, the requesting patron will be notified of the cost and, if still interested, this fee will be passed on to the patron in addition to the postage charge.

Bladen County Public Library has experienced problems with prompt return of ILL materials. Lending libraries charge for the replacement of materials if they are not returned or returned past the due date. The cost of replacing materials for another library system is extremely high. Some academic libraries have a standard $100 replacement fee for any title. This also may adversely affect future loans to Bladen County Public Library. In an effort to prevent this, new ILL patrons will be assessed a minimum $25 deposit to order ILL materials. If materials are ordered from an academic institution, the deposit will be higher. This fee will be returned when ILL materials are returned to Bladen County Library. Any overdue charges will be subtracted from the deposit.
