Computer Use Policy

Users shall assume full responsibility for using the computer equipment, printing, and other resources. Users are expected to be courteous to others including library employees. The Library is not responsible for lost, damaged, or unavailable information due to technical or other difficulties.

GUIDELINES FOR USE – SOFTWARE AND INTERNET

  • The use of public access software applications, on-line applications, and equipment is a privilege and at the individual’s own risk.
  • Each workstation is meant to be used by not more than two users at one time.
  • Each user is to legibly sign in on the log sheet located at the desk, noting starting and ending time and workstation number. By signing the log in sheet the user is agreeing to the computer use policy.
  • Each use is for one 30-minute session which may be renewed if no one is waiting.
  • Preschool and young children must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible helper.
  • The person initiating the print command is responsible for all printing costs at current rate. Asking for assistance is encouraged if a user is not sure about the print size or print commands.
  • No changes of any kind may be made to the Library’s software or equipment.
  • Downloading, saving or e-mailing files is at the user’s own risk. No supplies are provided by the Library. No files may be saved to the library equipment.
  • The Library does not provide e-mail accounts.
  • Basic computer skills are expected. However staff will assist as time and resources allow.

GUIDELINES FOR INAPPROPRIATE USE

This list includes, but is not limited to:

  • It is not appropriate to access pornographic or offensive materials.
  • It is not appropriate to harass others
  • It is not appropriate to violate any federal, state or local law.
  • It is not appropriate to use for any commercial, advertising, or business promotional use.
  • It is not appropriate to hack or attempt to break into any computer system.
  • It is not appropriate to send or receive chain letters or list serves.
  • It is not appropriate to incur expense to the library or any other second party.
  • It is not appropriate to misrepresent oneself or the library. It is not appropriate to be loud, physically abuse the equipment, or exhibit behavior that is unacceptable on Library property.
  • It is not appropriate to give out personal information, family information, or financial information


The Library staff will terminate inappropriate use and deny future access as necessary.

GENERAL INTENT

Computer software applications and Internet access at the Charlestown-Clark County Libraries are intended to provide all people equal access to digital technologies. The library has accepted several grants which have an impact on this policy. The Children’s Internet Protection Act, a federal law to protect minors online, has also shaped this policy.
The primary purpose of digital technologies in the library is to assist in the Library’s mission of life long learning to members of the community. Access to information is the primary intent.
