Background Check Policy

The Charlestown-Clark County Public Library is committed to providing a safe environment for both patrons and employees, and reserves the right to investigate the information provided by applicants, volunteers and new employees in an attempt to select the best qualified applicants for work in the library. This check may include driving record, identity, address and driver’s license verification, criminal background, drug test, prior employment history, references, education and professional license verification. The Charlestown-Clark County Public Library will conduct background checks on volunteers and new hires prior to employment.

Discovery of certain adverse information provided by the background check may be grounds for the Charlestown-Clark County Public Library to take action including but not limited to: rescinding the job offer, refusal of volunteerism or termination of employment.

  • Prior to employment, the library will conduct a detailed reference, background, credit, criminal check of an applicant. All reference, background, credit, criminal checks will be in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act and other applicable laws. Criminal background checks are conducted via the Indiana State Police, or another organization as appropriate. The results of the background check will be sent directly to the Director of the Library. The cost of the background check will be covered by the library. Failure to pass the background check may result in rescinding an offer of employment.
  • The library will conduct a driving record check of any candidate who is being considered for employment in a position where driving a vehicle is one of the job duties or when transporting staff to meetings. Annual checks will occur throughout employment. Failure to maintain insurability may result in the inability to retain certain job responsibilities.
  • Information collected will be treated confidentially.
