Private-eye Savannah Reid (Murder à la Mode, 2005, etc.) ends up investigating pro bono when her houseguest's spa makeover comes complete with a corpse. Since no good deed goes unpunished, Savannah, owner of the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency, should have known that agreeing to put up her assistant Tammy Hart's cousin—in town for a free visit to Emerge, San Carmelita's hot new beauty spot—would be nothing but trouble. Abigail Simpson is a grouch who snaps at anyone who mentions the weighty subject of her body. And before Abby can settle in for her first organic peel, plastic surgeon Suzette Du Bois, the spa's owner, disappears. The sooner Du Bois turns up, the sooner Savannah can get rid of her grumpy guest. So she agrees to help police detective Dirk Coulter track down the missing medico—a deal made sweeter when Du Bois's partner, Sergio D'Alessandro, offers to pay her to find Du Bois and the money she stole from him. Publicity director Devon Wright seems to hate Savannah on sight, but receptionist Myrna Cooper, a poster girl for liposuction, befriends her, and soon Van has the inside scoop on the Emerge staff. As the bodies pile up, Savannah learns quickly that, unlike the Emerge crew, she has to dig beneath the surface to find a killer with a motive for mayhem. Savannah's as feisty as ever, managing emotional insecurities and homicidal tendencies with equanimity. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
